I took a break. I've been meaning to for a while. I stopped blogging just to see if I missed it. I didn't. Over the last year or so, I've seen similar sentiment across a load of my favourite blogs. This particular blog was started on April 13th 2005. At that time, the platform which blogging delivered was a breath of fresh air. It allowed people like me (with limited programming ability) to produce web content in a simple diary format, and allowed me to share all the interesting things I found along the way. Things change though, and over time blogs became increasingly focussed, professional entities. Sure there are plenty of personal blogs around, but the internet is a different place now, that's for sure. The advent of twitter and tumblr for example have made sharing links, videos and images a whole lot easier and digestible, and the quality of curated content sites has skyrocketed.
So where does that leave sleepingimnyhead? Well the good news is that I'm not pulling the plug, but it will change. When I started, I wrote a weekly piece called 'webwatch', which was a list of the 10 most interesting things I found that week. I think there's too much of that now, and lots of folks do that much better than I. That activity also becomes irritatingly cyclical. We've all seen the same image linked to on multiple blogs before. As such, I'm going to focus this blog on creation not curation (in the words of Bobby Kim). I do a fair few side projects from my day-job, and this is the place where they'll be shared. I'll still write the occasional piece of comment, but there'll be a lot less of other people's work, and more of mine.
As a way to kick that off here's two of my current tumblr projects:
Ten word movie reviews
Designers touching their faces
I also have a twitter feed, where links and comments will be posted, as that's the best place for 'em. You can follow the feed to the right of this column, or follow me directly at @fosta.
There's also three other projects in the pipeline, enigmatically codenamed PG99, EOTR and DCC, but more will come of that later. I'm also working on a redesign of this site but that takes time, especially for me. Thanks for the ride so far, it's been an interesting six years, but if we don't change, we stagnate. Comments will be left open, but not for those of you selling fake handbags, viagra or ways in which I can earn $300 working form home. See you soon.
