A good friend of mine (Matt Ward) and I used to get together two or three times a year for what we called 'camera club'. This consisted of meeting up somewhere interesting, taking photos until it got dark and then heading off to the pub. It was fun, but the 'club' part became a bit of a joke.
Recently, however, we decided to make a go of it. We founded the Designers Camera Club, and last night was our first meeting. We gathered together a few close friends and visited Wilton's Music Hall, the only remaining music hall in London, followed by a couple of pints. Today we open up the club properly. It's still very freeform, so don't expect membership cards or anything, but we're up and running. Below is a bit of blurb outlining the whys and wherefores:
The role of the camera in the design process has changed hugely over the last decade or so. Designers are increasingly using cameras not only to record their work, but as an integral part of it. Designers also take certain types of photo and make certain types of movies. Designers like cameras. This interests us, so we’ve formed a club. DCC will meet on a semi-regular basis, perhaps once a month. The formal meets will take three forms:
Talks - Lots of folks are using cameras in interesting ways. We’ll gather some of them together to share their approach and experiences in small informal presentations.
Access - As a club, we should be able to get access to photograph some pretty interesting places, which we may not be able to as individuals.
Experiments - This is the ‘doing’ aspect of our club. We all want to learn about cameras and photography, and intend to play as much as possible. There’s a world of opportunities.
We have a flickr group, which you're welcome to join, even if you don't come to the meets. You can find this here: LINK
We also have a twitter account, which will tell you when the next meet will happen, plus lots of other information. You can find this here: LINK
If you want to get in touch, to find out more, offer to give a talk, or help out in any way, you can email us here: designerscameraclub@gmail.com
Hope to see you soon. (I have a few stickers too, so hit us up if you want a few)
