Hey, hey y'all. I'm back after the christmas break, yup, that quickly. Was nice to see the family, but the road trip's a bit of a killer. I found myself in Hitchin on christmas Eve (don't ask) in a fairly rough pub. We decided that the gang of kids in there had decided to get proper shitfaced, so the atmosphere soon became unbearable. We decided to leave, and on the way out, i saw this sign, which confused me on so many levels.
1) why hats? I know why pubs don't let people wear football shirts or building clothes, but hats? Since when has a hat been a problem?
2) why after 7? what's so important about 7? do they turn away hat wearers after that? If you go in at 6.30 with a hat, and refuse to take it off half an hour later do they kick you out?
3) a straw boater? If we make the crazy assumption that a hat wearer is an undesirable (but only after 7) then the last thing we need is an ultraviolent gondolear. There's nothing worse than an agressive barbershop quartet, tanked up on gin slings.
4) that's not a hat, that's a sweatshirt. It would be a very elaborate hat if it required you to put your arms and torso through it. Even the hats at ascot aren't that complicated.
5) I can just about understand banning caps. If the pub has cctv, then the baddies can hide their faces, ok. But a bobble hat? It was freezing outside, and loads of people sensibly had a wooly hat on. Where's the sense in banning a bobble hat?
Can you see the staff going round this pub at 6.59, knocking off peoples hats and getting them to put their hoods down. Silly silly publican, must try harder.

I went along to the DPMHI store last night to the opening of their new gallery show. The work on display is by the one and only Mode2, if you're not sure who that is, Page 60, in Henry Chalfant's 'spraycan art' should help. Considering i first saw his work nearly 20 years ago, it was quite nice to see some new stuff. Well i say new stuff, but his style has remained fairly static, which some might say is a problem, but i say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it... nice though, pop along if you get a chance.

I was walking along the banks of the Thames yesterday morning and i happened to pass a stunning piece of DIY. Someone has bought an old Parcel Force van and decided to transform it into the one and only Optimus Prime. What you can't see is the big '4 sale' sign in the windscreen, in case you want it, contact me, and i'll tell you where it is. I'm not expecting many emails.
Incidentally, the Wiki for Optimus Prime (linked above) is massive... some people have way too much time etc. etc.

I looked out of the window a few moments ago and saw a man and a woman on the roof of a building down below. I thought it looked weird, so i watched them for a while. Initially i thought they were inspecting the roof or something, but it was soon clear that they weren't looking at anything around them, and they weren't exactly dressed for it. It looked to me like they were arguing, and the bloke kept turning around and becoming quite agitated. This went on for a couple of minutes, then they hugged and kissed, and went out of sight into a door. Weird huh? What's funny is that i think they went on the roof to be somewhat 'private', but their building is surrounded by tower blocks, so there must have been a few thousand people who saw them.

I looked out of the window this lunchtime and i nearly dropped my pretzel. Outside was a helicopter pulling a massive flag, and i mean MASSIVE! It raised loads of questions, how do they land? what happens if they have to ditch the flag? does it affect the flight? surely the wind blows it about? Well, for your benefit, i looked into it.
The company who operate the system are called HOBS banners, and can fly a banner of up to 45,000 square feet.
There's a wiki too, with a good explanation of 'helibanners'. It appears that they take off with the flag deployed, rather than deploy it whilst flying, which seems really dangerous to me. Imaging the flag getting tangled in the rotors, eek.

It's been a while since I've played records to a discerning public but last night i broke my hiatus. Remember the Playstation 3 space i blogged about earlier this year? well last night, i was called upon to entertain the crowds there, and what wholesome fun it was. I think i might get back into it, dust off some old 45's and get to pressing some buttons.

it's true, there really is gold at the end of a rainbow....
